Pinewood Derby with Cub Scout Pack 1700 is a big hit! Our family has made dozens of derby cars over the years, but this was our first event hosted at a local restaurant. Double Dave’s Pizza really delivered an awesome derby! They graciously hosted the event on their patio, and it was so fun checking in the cars Friday night with live music. One of our den chiefs from the local troop learned “more cowbell” with some audience participation.
On Saturday morning, we gathered together before the store opened for derby day. There was a fantastic spread of breakfast pizza, various pastries, and of course their famous pepperoni rolls (my personal favorite). It was so fun visiting with all the families and letting the kids race the cars. The derby is definitely one of my favorite scouting traditions, and it was a perfect morning!
The kids enjoyed playing games with each other and then it was off to the races! The pinewood derby heats featured each of the Lions, Tigers, Wolves, Bears, Webelos and Arrow of Light dens facing off against each other. Siblings and adults made cars too, and the kids enjoyed racing them all against each other! One of the joys of a smaller pack is getting to know each other well and get up close and involved with all the events.
Trophies were awarded for the fastest cars, and some special certificates were presented for the pinewood derby. Huge thanks to Double Dave’s with a “Scout Sprit” award. Youth development groups like this could not exist without support from the community and families that help make the magic happen!
Did you know Boy Scouts of America has a new name. Scouting America is a fabulous program for both girls and boys. Check out a group near you for some fabulous family fun!
